Disaster Management Initiative – Chiplun Floods 2020
During the devastating 2020 floods in Chiplun, Vaghmi Foundation stepped in as part of a coordinated disaster response effort alongside a network of NGOs. Immediate Relief Support Vaghmi Foundation mobilized quickly to deliver essential relief materials including: Groceries Daily-use necessities Emergency support supplies These materials were distributed to flood-affected families in coordination with local authorities to ensure timely and organized support.
This initiative highlights Vaghmi Foundation’s commitment not only to humanitarian relief but also to sustainable disaster management, ensuring both people and the environment are protected.
Identifying a Hidden Crisis While submitting relief materials to government officials, the Vaghmi team observed an unexpected and serious concern — lakhs of plastic bottles had been donated along with relief supplies. Though well-intentioned, this created a major environmental and logistical challenge. Accumulating plastic waste in a disaster-hit town could lead to: Sanitation issues Blocked drainage systems Increased health risks Long-term environmental damage Recognizing this as an urgent secondary crisis, Vaghmi Foundation immediately shifted into action.
Community Mobilization & Awareness Drive
To address the situation, Vaghmi collaborated with local influencers and volunteers:
RJ Bandya recorded a public awareness message.
Chiplun cha Balya shared the appeal within his network, mobilizing volunteer teams across the region.
Together, a large-scale Plastic Bottle Collection Drive was planned in coordination with the Chiplun Municipal Council.
Government & Volunteer Support
Vaghmi Foundation requested logistical support from local authorities, including:
Municipal vehicles for collection
A designated storage space for the collected plastic
The Municipal Commissioner and the District Collector’s office extended full cooperation, enabling smooth execution of the drive.
Volunteers worked in teams across the town to collect and transport the bottles from multiple locations.
A Record-Breaking Environmental Action
The result was extraordinary:
âś… 10 dumpers of plastic bottles collected in a single day (29 tons)
âś… A major sanitation risk averted
âś… City spaces cleared of potential environmental hazards
âś… Waste sent to recycling facilities for proper processing
This initiative demonstrated how disaster response must also address environmental consequences to prevent future crises.
